Mr Abdelmaksoud is a substantive Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust with nearly two decades of experience in ophthalmology. He specialises in corneal and refractive surgery, providing both general ophthalmic care and expert services in the management of corneal diseases.
Accredited by the Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery (CertLRS), he is proficient in a wide range of corneal-based laser refractive procedures, including LASIK, LASEK, PRK, and PTK. He also has extensive expertise in lens-based refractive surgery, utilising premium multifocal and toric intraocular lenses. His clinical repertoire includes the management of dry eye syndrome, blepharitis, ocular surface disorders, seasonal and atopic eye conditions, and keratoconus, including corneal cross-linking.
Over the course of his career, Mr Abdelmaksoud has performed countless cataract and lens replacement surgeries, including procedures involving advanced lens implants. His surgical experience extends to more than 500 laser procedures across various ocular structures—cornea, iris, lens capsule, vitreous, and retina.
He has treated hundreds of patients with dry eye disease, ocular allergies, blepharitis, and pterygium (with conjunctival autografting), as well as numerous cases of keratoconus. His clinical expertise has been shaped by nearly 10 years of service within the NHS and five years of international practice across the USA, Egypt, India, and the Arabian Gulf.
Mr Abdelmaksoud completed a post-CCT fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, a renowned tertiary centre for complex corneal disorders and home to the UK’s first corneal bank. He underwent ophthalmic specialty training through the South Yorkshire rotation in Sheffield, including a targeted specialist component (TSC) year in corneal surgery, culminating in the award of his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
He is a Fellow of the International Council of Ophthalmology and holds fellowships from both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCS).
An accomplished medical educator, Mr Abdelmaksoud holds a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Manchester. He has served as a microsurgical skills course tutor at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and as an honorary lecturer in ophthalmology at the University of Manchester. Currently, he serves as an FRCOphth Part 2 examiner, a GMC Associate PLAB examiner, an OSCE exam writer for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, and a clinical and surgical supervisor.
